*Richmond Art Gallery
Arthur Renwick, MASK
January 29 --** April 4, 2010
Opening Reception, Thursday, January 28, 7 -- 9 pm*

Richmond Art Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of photographic
work by First Nations artist, Arthur Renwick. Originally from Kitamaat,
and now based in Toronto, Renwick's recent /work /has been garnering a
lot of attention nationally and internationally. Arthur Renwick builds
on his previous exhibition, /Mask/, with a new body of work /Mask:
Artists and Curators/./ /

In this series he exhibits larger than life portraits of First Nations
artists and curators who participated in a curatorial conference in
Vancouver, British Columbia at the UBC First Nations House (not far from
the UBC Anthropology Museum) in 2009. Many at the conference were
accustomed to questioning and challenging their "Indian" identity in
their work. Already familiar with the stereotypical portrayal as
recorded by history, pop culture, and the contemporary lens, they were
asked to gaze back into Renwick's Hasselblad and "pull a face" in
response. The result is more than humorous, a body of images that
depicts a culture alive, reactive and very comfortable with challenging
and mocking the norm.

Renwick was born in Kitimat, British Columbia, in 1965. He received his
MFA in photography from Concordia University, Montreal, in 1993. Since
graduating he has participated in several solo and group exhibitions at
public museums and galleries, including The Musee du Quai Branly and the
Canadian Cultural Centre, both in Paris, France, Gallery 44 in Toronto
and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Renwick combines politically engaged
subject matter with a contemporary aesthetic to create sophisticated,
beautifully crafted works that address issues of identity. In 2005 he
won the K.M. Hunter Artist Award. His work has recently been shown in
Montreal and Toronto and will be exhibited at the Smithsonian National
Museum in New York in 2010. The twelve works of his 2006 Mask Series
were purchased by the National Gallery of Canada in 2008. He is
represented by the Leo Kamen Gallery in Toronto, Canada.

Richmond Art Gallery acknowledges Cultural Olympiad and the City of
Richmond for their contributions to the exhibition.
