Burnaby Couple Uses Shadbolt's Fine Art Classes for Healing
BURNABY, BC - Currently, works from the class of 'Watercolour with
Julieann' feature David & Bev McGuigan, a husband and wife team who have
been active students at the Shadbolt Centre taking a total of 39 art
classes since 2004. David takes classes in drawing & watercolour, Bev
takes classes in clay.
In 2006, Bev was diagnosed with cancer and stopped doing pottery while
undergoing treatment. When she returned to take classes with Sabrina
Keskula, she found that the cancer treatments had left her with some
memory problems, impaired judgement and very little strength. She was
able to make beads, and spent most of the session doing just that.
Sabrina and the students were wonderful - very helpful and patient when
Bev had difficulty remembering things. Bev felt like the Centre was a
home to come to during that period. The class got her out of the house
and became very important, almost like occupational therapy - and
slowly, but surely her strength and cognitive skills began to return.

David, facing a recurring struggle with cancer, uses art as a form of
therapy as he finds that art is relaxing and enjoyable. Due to limited
space and time, David McGuigan does little art work at home - just a bit
of sketching. His Shadbolt classes provide him with "his forced night
to do watercolours". He finds that the mix of students helps the class
along and working with others provides a certain vitality. David says,
"The instructors at the Shadbolt have all been excellent - very quick to
assess the individual level of each student and provide extra help where
needed and more challenge to those who can handle it." David has become
increasingly less bashful about showing his artwork and has participated
in the Shadbolt Adult Gala Exhibition in the past and, in the last
couple of years, has been showing at work.
The Shadbolt Centre is thrilled to present Bev's and David's work. Talk
about inspiration!
The exhibit has been extended to January 31st at Encore's Gallery,
Shadbolt Centre for the Arts,
Burnaby, B.C.
