*Bye-Bye Birdies*

*New Westminster**, BC* -- At the end of January the popular */Birds of
Prey/* exhibit will be closing after ten months showing at the Fraser
River Discovery Centre. On Saturday January 30, visitors will be invited
to say good-bye to the birds with tours and activities.

The Discovery Centre is partnering with the Institute of Urban Ecology
at Douglas College who will offer their popular bird box workshop to
visitors. The Institute works to make nature an important part of life
in the city. Since 1984, it has conducted research, nurtured natural
habitats and offered environmental education workshops to school and
community groups. By building a bird box, visitors will be able to
provide birds with a suitable habitat in their own backyard.

In addition to the bird boxes, visitors can experience owl tunnel
vision, discover the secret behind silent flight and try out nest
building. Rebecca O'Neill, Education Assistant, explains that, "nest
building is an art which depends on what kind of feet and beak you have.
At the Birdie Nest Building Station visitors can pick different 'feet'
and try to build a nest." She warns, "it's not as easy as it looks!"

*/Birds of Prey/* is a bilingual exhibition designed and produced by
the* Royal BC Museum* and created with financial assistance from*
Canadian Heritage*. Kathleen Bertrand, Exhibit Coordinator, says, "We've
had a lot of great feedback from visitors about the exhibit. People
really like that they can get up close and see the details of these
amazing birds. */Birds of Prey/* is not likely to be shown again in the
Lower Mainland for quite some time and we're hoping that anyone who has
not had a chance to see the birds will be able to come by on the 30^th ."

A guided tour of the exhibit will begin at 2pm on Saturday. All tours
and activities, including the bird boxes, are included in admission to
the Centre. Saturday will be the last day to see */Birds of Prey/*.

The */Birds of Prey/* departure makes room for two new exhibits at
the Centre scheduled to open on February 6. /The Ripple Effect/ uses the
story of Fin Donnelly's two swims of the Fraser River to explore how we
as individuals can affect the health of the Fraser River. In
/Build-a-Boat: Wooden Boat Building on the Fraser/ visitors will be
invited to participate in the construction of an 18 foot Fraser
River wooden skiff inside the Centre.

The Fraser River Discovery Centre is an interpretive centre connecting
communities in discovery and celebration of the living, working Fraser
River. It is located at 788 Quayside Drive, New Westminster. The
Discovery Centre is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm. Admission
rates apply for the exhibit galleries.
