Border Zones: New Art Across Cultures, presented with Vancouver 2010
Cultural Olympiad, is an exhibition of international contemporary art that
opened MOA’s Audain Gallery on Saturday, January 23, 2010. It brings
together the work of twelve artists engaged in a dialogue about cultural
boundaries – within and between communities, art practices, audiences, or
institutions – and the possibility of translation across them.

At 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 26, two of the exhibiting artists, Tania
Mouraud and Rosanna Raymond, will present performance pieces at a reception
to which everyone is welcome. Other artists will also be in attendance.

Rosanna Raymond uses poetry, performance, costume, body adornment, film, and
photography in her work as artist and curator. To accompany her installation
at MOA, Cling to the Sea, she has created a performance piece, SaVAge K’lub,
in which she responds to the legacy of collector Frank Burnett (whose
Oceanic materials formed MOA's founding collection in 1927), and the
perception of Pacific women and cultures he helped to establish. Born in New
Zealand, Raymond is of Samoan-Päkehä descent, and currently lives in London,
UK.

Tania Mouraud lives and works in Paris, France, exhibits internationally,
and since 1976 has taught art at L’Ecole Regionale d’Expression Plastique.
Throughout her career she has investigated the relationship between
language, space, and imagery and often incorporates the written word,
photography, and video imagery into large, site-specific installations. In
Face to Face, her installation at MOA, Mouraud shows images of destruction
and waste that parallel global patterns of consumption, accompanied by an
almost overwhelmingly loud soundscape of industrial noise. In her
performance piece, As it Were, Mouraud will fill the Great Hall with the
sound of ringing cash registers, bombs, and sirens, smashing the Museum's
usually quiet and ordered environment, and forcing the audience to
reconsider the boundaries of their own expectations about what museums are
or can be.

Participating artists in Border Zones: New Art Across Cultures include
Hayati Mokhtar, Dain-Iskandar Said, John Wynne, Edward Poitras,
Thamotharampillai Shanaathanan, Tania Mouraud, Marianne Nicolson, Gu Xiong,
Prabakar Visvanath, Rosanna Raymond, Ron Yunkaporta, and Laura Wee Láy Láq.
