The Tree: From the Sublime to the Social

July 24 to September 26, 2010

GO Party! fundraiser and Opening Reception, Friday July 23, 7-10 pm

The GO Party! fundraiser is building on our already successful gallery
openings, making the evenings bigger and better, and will be another
great summer soiree outside on the Gallery patio and side lawn. There
will be door prizes, refreshments, and a cash bar, with local wine and
delicious beer from Tree Brewing. Guests will enjoy music on our outdoor
patio; Cameron Ward and Curtis Parry on guitar and bass will perform
with Jazz Singer Anna Jacyszyn.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to present The Tree: From the Sublime
to the Social, which is brought to us by the Vancouver Art Gallery's
provincial touring program, Across the Province. This exhibition
includes works that range from historical paintings by Emily Carr and
members of the Group of Seven, for example, to works by contemporary
photographers fascinated by the layers of social meaning linked to the
image of a tree.

This exhibition will have wide appeal to people visiting the Kelowna
area as tourists, as well as to the community itself. It provides a
convenient opportunity to view original works by several of the
well-known contemporary Vancouver photographic artists, whose
reputations now extend internationally, including Rodney Graham, Karin
Bubas, Liz Magor, and Ian Wallace.

The Tree: From the Sublime to the Social is organized and circulated by
the Vancouver Art Gallery, with generous support of Odlum Brown. The
exhibition was curated by Daina Augaitis, Chief Curator / Associate
Director, with Emmy Lee, Assistant Curator, and is accompanied by a
free, full-colour brochure.

The Kelowna Art Gallery will mount a small complementary show in our
Reynolds Gallery drawn from the permanent collection entitled The
Okanagan Tree.

Jim Kalnin: Not Far From the Tree
July 16 - September 19, 2010

In conjunction with our summer exhibition The Tree: From the Sublime to
the Social, local artist Jim Kalnin will be creating temporary charcoal
drawings on the walls in Gallery's Front project space. Kalnin's tree
drawings will incorporate images from various kinds of human activity,
including art, culture, politics, and technology, expressing the view
that everything humans have created relies on nature for its existence.
Everything on the planet comes from the planet; we are far more
connected than we sometimes realize. Kalnin will use natural charcoal
that he made from trees that once grew in his yard. By creating these
large ephemeral wall drawings, and by using a medium that has been made
from recycled trees, Kalnin is extending the theme of continual change,
and the fact that everything in the universe is in constant flux.
Nothing, not even art, lasts forever.
