BC Museum of Mining Presents "Copper & Fire"
Summer Arts Events - August 7 & 8, 2010
Britannia Beach, BC - The BC Museum of Mining, a prominent historical
destination located in Britannia Beach 10 minutes south of Squamish,
presents the "Copper & Fire" Summer Arts Events 2010. This exciting and
interactive community event held at the peak of summer on Saturday, August
7th and Sunday, August 8th, highlights the work of artists and artisans from
around the region and features performances by musicians, art exhibits, a
presentation by a fire spinner and much more.
"Copper & Fire" is an annual event organized by the BC Museum of Mining
which showcases the diversity of the community through art. This summer, the
event will kick off with an evening concert with musician Joseph 'Pepe'
Danza. Known for his accomplishments in the areas of percussion and as a
multi-instrumentalist, Pepe will delight the audience with the invigorating
sounds of world music. Pepe recently won the 2009 Jessie award for Original
Composition.
"The response this year from artists has been tremendous. More than ever,
this year's copper and fire event will be exciting in the diversity of the
arts and the relationship to mining." says Carol Watts, Event Coordinator
for the Museum.
Featured artists participating in the "Copper & Fire" event include metal
artists working with copper and bronze, potters using a number of different
mediums, and jewelers, to name a few.
The Museum promotes mining awareness through entertaining, experiential
education programs, important historic collection preservation and
insightful public engagement about the environment and sustainability
issues. Surrounded by the majestic Coastal Mountains and the spectacular
beauty of Howe Sound, the museum provides a unique blend of entertainment
and information that allows guests to leave with a better understanding of
mining in BC; past, present and future.
This year, as the Museum undergoes a major three-phase redevelopment
project, transforming a legacy site into a vibrant internationally
recognized destination, the location becomes an even more ideal spot to host
the arts and community event. Soon to be completed in fall 2010, the new
site will celebrate the contribution of minerals to society, the history of
the storied community and the ideas and practices of renewal and
sustainability.
Come experience the vibrant community of Britannia Beach and be inspired by
the performances and works of the talented individuals of our region.
