POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Director is the senior staff position within the organization, reporting to the Board of Directors.  The position is accountable for planning and directing the programs, exhibits and services offered by the Children’s Museum and for the daily operations of the organization, either directly or through delegation to other staff.  The position is also responsible for working with the Board of Directors to establish the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the organization, and for the planning, implementation and evaluation of activities required to achieve the Board-approved strategic directions.  The position supports the work of the Board of Directors and actively represents the Children’s Museum in a wide range of forums at both strategic and operational levels.  
 
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Stakeholder Development, Marketing and Communication
·         Actively seek out and develop partnerships and other collaborative initiatives that advance the growth and are consistent with the mission, vision and strategic direction of the Children’s Museum
·         Continually build relationships with a broad range of community sectors including:  city communities, all levels of government, other non-profit organizations and business organizations
·         Liaise with corporate funders, granting bodies, private donors and other parties who are interested in, and who can help advance the growth and mission of the Children’s Museum through increased earned and contributed revenues
·         Develop diverse and targeted communications programs that inform all stakeholders on the organization’s efforts and outcomes, on an effective and timely basis using regular and social media strategies
·         Develop an annual marketing and communication plan 
 
Program and Business Development – Planning and Implementation
·         Oversee the implementation of programs for the Children’s Museum that are consistent with the mission, vision and strategic direction and also consistent with current trends in child development and educational needs
·         Develop an annual draft business plan 
·         Ensure that the goals of the business plan and strategic plan are achieved 
·         Actively lead the ongoing development of market research, planning and program/exhibit development for the Children’s Museum, and supervise the implementation of these initiatives
·         Ensure the development and implementation of performance measures and 
 
Human Resources
·         For direct reports, undertake interview, selection, and disciplinary actions as required; set performance objectives; evaluate performance 
·         Supervise staff and volunteers as applicable directly or through others’ quality standards, to achieve the goals and objectives assigned by the Board, consistent with the mission, vision and strategic directions of the Children’s Museum
·         Promote and support a culture of teamwork and positive interpersonal relations, learning and sharing of knowledge, effective communications, inclusiveness and mutual respect, cultural competency, and constructive problem-solving among staff, volunteers, partners and the Board
·         Motivate staff to realize their potential and meet their responsibilities; facilitate change, encourage continuous improvement, learning and professional development; develop an environment conducive to and supportive of innovation and creativity
 
Organization Management and Accountability
·         Direct the annual budgeting process and prepare annual budget recommendations to the Board 
·         Ensure the timely preparation of monthly financial statements for the operation of the organization, including variance analyses, quarterly budget updates / reviews and related undertakings for Board consideration
·         Ensure the presence and ongoing review of financial control procedures and practices to ensure the integrity of the accounting, fund management, asset management, purchasing and related operational systems
·         Develop and implement a records and data management system, technology plan and related tasks that facilitate access to and application of written, digital and related materials and resources
 
Board Reporting and Supports
·         Ensure the availability of all supports required for the Board of Directors and the Standing Committees in terms of agenda preparation and pre-circulation, the recording and distribution of meeting minutes, records management, documents and information distribution, meeting logistics and related supports
·         Attend all Board and Standing Committee meetings as appropriate, fully participating per Board direction and requirements
·         Prepare reports, statistics and information packages that support Board policy, strategic and governance discussions 
·         Participate with the Board in the periodic development of the organization’s strategic plan and the plan’s annual review 
·         Speak on behalf of or represent the Children’s Museum in public forums, to the media and in other settings 
·         Undertake other activities necessary to support the achievement of the organization’s mandate, mission or as directed by the Board of Directors
 
QUALIFICATIONS
·         Senior managerial level experience, preferably in the not-for-profit sector,  with demonstrated skills in staff management, business development, effective financial management of an annual operating budget over $1,000,000, and other business responsibilities, such as those associated with this position; similar additional experience in the corporate sector would be an asset
·         Demonstrated skills and experience in fund development, marketing and communications
·         Proven record of success and demonstration of exceptional skills in the identification, cultivation and management of relationships across key stakeholder groups, corporate donors, private funders, all levels of governments and the like 
·         Strong team building and organizational cultural development capacities, including the ability to effectively engage stakeholders and positively motivate staff and volunteer performance
·         Market research and strategic planning experience, along with the ability to source and analyze information relevant to the organization’s strategic planning and ongoing operations and growth
·         Acceptance and understanding of the Museum’s governance model, the associated roles of the Board and Executive Director, and the responsibilities of reporting to a Board of Directors related to both directions and approvals
·         University Degree in a relevant discipline
