I'm with you Helen and Debbie.
I think the purchase of the Henderson sweater is an example of genuine
care for, and understanding of, Canadian Culture on the part of our
government. That sweater is an important Canadian Cultural Artifact
with a story to tell just a surely as a Carr painting or a Loyalist
uniform. Having just hosted the Rocket Richard exhibit here in Prince
George, in a MUSEUM, I have witnessed first hand the pride people feel
for our sports heroes and key moments. There is no question that sport
is culture.
Incidentally, the 19,000 people in attendance at the Montreal
Canadiennes game and the UFC 113 in Montreal recently were extremely
proud of their hometown hockey team and our Canadian athletes. To
sarcastically insist that their definition of culture is somehow
inferior to your own is insulting.

I am sorry I do not understand your sarcasm. The goal by Paul Henderson
did more to unite this wonderful country of ours than almost anything
else. No matter how you feel about sport, it does produce patriotic
fervour in the nation. Just look to the recently held Winter Olympics.
Where else in the world would people sing the national anthem in the
streets?
I do hope you are not of the camp that feels museums, good; sports, bad.
Both have their place in our Canadian culture. In case you are
wondering. I have been a sports fan since my Dad took me to a baseball
game in the 1950s. This same man instilled in me a love of history and
museums as we visited local museums on every camping trip. I now work in
the heritage field and have been a volunteer for over 30 years, so am
aware of the need for preservation. Quite frankly, I am getting
frustrated with some folks' narrow view of what culture is.
