POSITION TITLE:   EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Executive Director (ED) is the Chief Administrative Office of the
Society holding broad and diverse responsibilities for the management and
administration of the Society’s assets, facilities and projects in
accordance with its constitution, policies and the priorities approved by
the Directors.

The ED is a key Society representative and the primary liaison between the
Board of Directors, government and financial supporters and strategic
partners and is responsible for financial and project management
including; budgeting, proposal submissions, monitoring and reporting
results.  The ED provides overall direction to and supervision of Society
employees and maintains a problem-solving atmosphere in the work place.

REPORTS TO:  Board of Directors

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Ensuring effective management and administration practices are
implemented

2.     Ensuring financial accountability through maximizing sources of
income, good budgeting, expenditure management, sound financial controls
and monitoring and reporting on an ongoing basis.  Interpreting financial
information for the Directors, responding to their questions and ensuring
they have the necessary information to make informed decisions

3.     Creating and maintaining a positive professional image for the
Society through ongoing liaison with communities, governments and clients

4.     Supporting the Board of Directors so they may function effectively,
including providing good information, clear advice and recommendations for
action or decisions and participating as a member of all Board Committees
and acting as a liaison between Society members and the Board of
Directors.

5.     Recruiting, leading, directing, supervising  and motivating
employees and volunteers by providing clear direction, support and
positive feedback and ensuring good human resources policies and practices
are in place

6.     Leading Board, staff and volunteers in processes to establish plans
and priorities to ensure that the needs of the Kwakwaka’wakw are being met

7.     Identifying and developing new projects, programs and services that
support the mandate of the Society and developing funding applications and
proposals

8.     Conducting both ongoing and periodic evaluations of operational
practices, policies and procedures, programs, activities and systems to
ensure that improvements are instituted as required

9.     Developing and maintaining positive working relationships with
other museum and cultural Centres, other organizations and individuals

10.  Liaising with Kwakwaka’wakw artists in the sales and commissions of
the work

11.  Ensuring the smooth operation of the Gift Shop

12.  Representing the Society at various events and conferences



Qualifications:

1.     A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field.

2.     An understanding of the Kwak̕wala Speaking Peoples culture,
language and history is necessary.  Experience working with and for a
Kwakwaka’wakw community is an asset as is Kwakwaka’wakw ancestry.

3.     Proven leadership/management skills.

4.     Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving abilities.

5.     The ability to work under the direction of a volunteer Board of
Directors which requires the capacity to work with a fair degree of
independence.

6.     Proven ability to write proposals and reports.

7.     Ability to understand and interpret financial information and to
plan and manage financial resources in accordance with available budgets.

This is a full-time position requiring a flexible work schedule.
Salary range is $50,000-$55,000.
