West Coast Modern Home Tour
Saturday, July 10th from 12 pm to 4pm; Home Tour Reception from 4pm to
6pm, $100
The West Vancouver Museum's popular fifth annual Modern Home Tour takes
place Saturday, July 10th from 12pm to 4pm, followed by a wine reception
at Eagle Harbour Yacht Club, where participants will enjoy spectacular
ocean views while sampling food donated by fine West Vancouver
restaurants.
This year the tour visits iconic examples of West Coast modern design
including the Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey 1965 Smith Residence
designed as a home and studio for artist Gordon Smith. Situated in the
forest with views to the ocean, the house is recognized by the Royal
Architectural Institute of Canada for its "enduring excellence and
national significance". Gordon Smith will be present during the tour.
The 1954 Stegeman Residence, designed by Erickson and Massey explores a
pure cubic structure and is the earliest example of the architects'
residential work remaining. The house, renovated by architect Brian
Hemingway, was once used as a Unitarian Church and recently as the set
location for the Cullen House in the movie Twilight New Moon. Bluesky
Architecture's Bo Helliwell and Kim Smith renovated their 1964 Fred
Hollingsworth and Barry Downs designed house by altering their living
quarters and by adding an adjacent work studio while maintaining the
principles of mid-century modernist design. Architect Russell
Hollingsworth's own home represents contemporary West Coast architecture
by a second generation modernist who acquired the knowledge, skills and
traditions of his predecessors.
A complete information package, with full details of all the homes, will
