Opening: Thursday, June 24 @ 7pm
June 18, 2010, Abbotsford, BC.... William Kurelek, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Jack Shadbolt, Andy Warhol, Kenojouac, Ted Harrison, Susan Point, Robert Davidson, Preston Singletary....Toronto? Montreal? Vancouver? No...Abbotsford. The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford is premiering four exhibitions on Thursday, June 24, 2010 from 7-9pm which include Abbotsford Collects, a selection of priceless works from Art Collectors in Abbotsford, and Challenging Traditions: Contemporary First Nations Art of the Northwest Coast.
Challenging Traditions, organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Ontario, and guest curated by Ian M. Thom, explores the re-emergence of the art of the Northwest Coast. The exhibition features contemporary First Nations artists such as Susan Point, Robert Davidson and Preston Singletary who have taken traditional Northwest Coast artistic practices and infused them with modern cultural influences. His Honour, The Honourable Steven L. Point, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia will bring his greetings to the opening reception.
Abbotsford Collects: Selected Works from Local Collectors is the first in a series, which display the rich and diverse private art collections of Abbotsford. The exhibition offers a sampling of the styles, periods, regions, art methods and media explored by local collectors. This initial exhibition provides a magnificent range of works; from William Kurelek and Jean-Paul Riopelle, to Andy Warhol and Ted Harrison.
"This is a milestone for The Reach", states Milt Walker, Chair of the Board of Directors, "and is the most significant selection of exhibitions to open in the Fraser Valley".
Also opening on June 24, Photography is ... by the Abbotsford Photo Arts Club and Essential Information by Christopher Friesen.
Photography is ... features the work of individual members of the Abbotsford Photo Arts Club and shows a variety of photographic styles and subjects in both colour and black-and-white formats. Included in the show are landscapes, portraits, wildlife and graphic interpretations.
Essential information, by Christopher Friesen, explores the pixel in the language of our times. The exhibition is set up to examine the fundamentals about imagery and how we get it to work. Friesen has revisited the work of French Post-Impressionist painter, George Seurat to address some of the same concerns but through a contemporary lens.
The exhibitions open June 24 with a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception from 7 to 9 pm and features a performance by Sto:lo dance group Semoya. The Reach is located at 32388 Veterans Way (corner of Trethewey and South Fraser Way) in Abbotsford. Admission to the exhibitions is free.
