The Social Dimension course at the University of Victoria is eligible for the Canadian Museums Association travel bursary program. Details on how to apply to CMA for funding to attend this course are at the end of this message. (Hurry, there are only a couple of spaces left in the course!)

On Campus at the University of Victoria: March 25- 27, 2010 plus
Online: March 29 - April 16, 2010

Computer-Based Interactive exhibits are now commonplace in museums, and many of these same institutions have developed online exhibits as well. While the technical requirements and design parameters of computer-based floor exhibits and online exhibits are quite different, the most common ingredient for success is the social dimension. Exhibits that encourage visitor interaction with each other, along with museum objects and content, are likely to have a stronger and more lasting impact with the visiting public.

Through this engaging course which blends a 3-day face-to-face and online component, you will join colleagues to investigate the latest interactive and collaborative technologies and develop your ability to:

·         understand the technological and social aspects of developing computer-based exhibits for the museum floor and the Web

·         define various types of online exhibits and visitor experiences, and identify the most effective practices in the field

·         understand the technical workings and unique cultures of the top social networking sites and how they are impacting the museum world

·         identify the core technologies and workings of multitouch and multiuser hardware and software

·         understand the design parameters involved in creating multitouch and multiuser exhibits

·         conceptualize and design more effective computer-based exhibits

·         create more engaging exhibits, with a stronger social dimension

·         plan, implement, and evaluate computer-based exhibits.

Instructor: Jim Spadaccini is the director of Ideum (www.ideum.com), a New Mexico-based multimedia design firm that works with museums, nonprofits, and socially responsible companies. The firm focuses on developing multitouch, multiuser exhibits and online exhibits emphasizing social media.  Over the last eight years, Ideum has worked on over 60 projects with top museums and cultural institutions across North America. Before founding Ideum, Jim was the Director of Interactive Media at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. In addition to teaching at UVIC, he teaches for the Technology-Enhanced Communication for Cultural Heritage (TEC-CH) program at the University of Lugano, Switzerland.

CMA Bursary Program
The Canadian Museums Association has funds to support  professionals and volunteers from museums and related heritage institutions to attend professional development activities.
If you are attending workshops, courses, symposium before March 31, 2010, you may still apply for the CMA bursaries.
The application for a bursary must be submitted BEFORE the event you are planning to attend!
