The Fraser River Discovery Centre wants you!

New Westminster, BC - The Fraser River Discovery Centre has two new ways for
visitors to get involved in their exhibits.

In Build-a-Boat: Wooden Boat Building on the Fraser, volunteers and visitors
are working hard on the 18 foot Fraser River skiff being constructed in the
gallery. The builders have completed the frame and they have begun work on
the planks. As the boat gets closer to completion, the Discovery Centre has
launched a boat naming contest. Kathleen Bertrand, Exhibit and Communication
Coordinator, explains, "Since this is a community building project, we
wanted to have the community's ideas for boat names. A boat naming contest
seemed perfect!" Once the boat is complete it will be on display in the
Discovery Centre. Boat building will continue every Saturday into the
spring. Bertrand says, "Every week, we are getting closer and closer to
finishing. If you've been meaning to come down, you don't have too many
weeks left." Boat naming ballot forms are available at the Discovery Centre
and suggestions are also welcomed on the Discovery Centre's Facebook page at
www.facebook.com/FraserRiverDiscoveryCentre. The contest winner will receive
a prize pack with an Annual Family Pass to the Fraser River Discovery Centre
and 5 family passes to any City of New Westminster Parks, Culture &
Recreation facility.

The Discovery Centre has also launched a call for artists for a photography
exhibit opening this September entitled, *click* Photos of the Fraser.
Bertrand describes the idea behind the exhibit. "Since Time Immemorial the
Fraser River basin has shaped the history, environment, industry and
cultures of this region. Today the Basin is home to almost 3 million people,
each with their own unique view of the river. With this exhibit we are
bringing together a collection of these points of view." The photos
submitted will be displayed online and selected images will be installed in
the galleries. *click" Photos of the Fraser will open during the Centre'
annual Artists on the River festival in September. Photographers interested
in submitting photos should go to the FRDC website at
www.fraserriverdiscovery.org <http://www.fraserriverdiscovery.org/> and
find the submission details and FAQs under the current exhibits tab.

The Fraser River Discovery Centre is an interpretive centre connecting
communities in discovery and celebration of the living, working Fraser
River. It is located at 788 Quayside Drive, New Westminster. The Discovery
Centre is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm. Admission rates apply for
the galleries.
