Posting for BCMA List Serve: Writing Statements of Significance WorkshopHere's an example of spooking the cattle into a stampede.
a.. Since all Heritage sites are "significant" in their respective communities - in the locals' eyes - all should be equally important on the provincial scale. Hence all should start running at once, lest be picked-off by the circling wolves.
b.. But where are they running to? At the end, in an exhausted pack, they have gone nowhere; they're all still essentially the same.
c.. Significance is a statistics term and tool; it has measurable quantitative features that indeed can differentiate one thing from another. But others have appropriated it into the lexicon of qualitative and subjective judgments. There's no honest way other than objective numerical comparisons that can identify true significance.
d.. The word "importance" is no better in this case; it also is a subjective value judgment, better left to familial or political realms.
e.. There is hope, however, in using the term "unique". What make a heritage site stand out from the others? What will be lost if the wolves get it?

A Statement of Significance is a tool used to commemorate important sites of historical significance in the community. It is a mandatory document that is used to formally recognize important historical places at the local, provincial and federal levels. As communities struggle to find funding sources to continue work on heritage projects, local governments are looking for opportunities to move forward with heritage projects and planning initiatives by reducing dependence on outside resources for the creation of these documents. To this end, the Port Coquitlam Heritage and Cultural Society is hosting a Statement of Significance writing workshop. The workshop will cover the different components and requirements of a Statement of Significance. The Statements of Significance may be used for Community Heritage Registers and other related heritage initiatives. Once participants complete the workshop they will be qualified to write Statements of Significance for local government submission to the BC Heritage Branch and the Canadian Register of Historic Places.

The workshop will be conducted by Berdine Jonker, the Acting Senior Heritage Planner with the BC Heritage Branch of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts. For more information on Statements of Significance and other heritage projects and initiatives please visit the website for the BC Heritage Branch: http://www.tca.gov.bc.ca/heritage/
