Bastion closed this summer
Nanaimo Daily News, Thursday, May 13, 2010
Nanaimo's famed Bastion will not re-open for tourists this May long
weekend, the traditional time operators allow visitors to look inside
the historic outpost building erected by the Hudson Bay Company.
The turreted building will stay closed while fundraising continues to
restore the building. The wooden structure has been closed since damp
rot was found, causing it to lean precariously at its waterfront
location.
A $300,000 fundraising campaign is now underway. The campaign has raised
$142,000 to date. The project is expected to last about four months.
Construction is expected to get underway soon and when the job is
finished the Nanaimo Museum, which is heading up the Passion for the
Bastion fundraising campaign, will hand over the proceeds.
"The museum's role in this is to try and generate funds," said Mark
Corbett, campaign coordinator.
"We'll do our best to raise money throughout the rest of the summer."
Major donors, including Nanaimo philanthropist Sidney Sharman, will
create art by firing paint from a cannon at a canvas placed outside the
Bastion on May 23 at 8 p.m., before the sun goes down for the annual
Empire Days fireworks.
