In follow up to the excellent BCMA conference hosted in Nanaimo, and the engaging plenary address "Museums and the Future: A Sense of Urgency" led by Bob Janes and Jacqueline Gijssen last Friday, the University of Victoria's Cultural Resource Management Program invite you to further explore the issues and challenge yourself and your organization to make a difference by registering in "Museums in a Troubled World: Stewards or Spectators" with Bob Janes, at UVic Nov. 29 - Dec. 3, 2010.

Museums in a Troubled World:
Stewards or Spectators?<http://www.uvcs.uvic.ca/aspnet/Course/Detail/?code=HA488H004>

Embark on a facilitated, highly engaging exploration of the meaning and role of museums and galleries as key intellectual and civic resources at a time of profound social and environmental change.

You will challenge and rethink mainstream museum practice as you consider the role and responsibility of museums in understanding and addressing current societal issues. Together with colleagues, you will generate and evaluate practical strategies that embody a greater commitment to socially responsible museum and gallery work.

Dates: November 29 to December 3, 2010
Plus, an online component December 6 to 12
Fee: $669 (includes a $75 materials fee); credit and non-credit options available
Registration deadline: November 1 (late registrations accepted if space permits)

Instructor: Robert (Bob) Janes is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Museum Management and Curatorship, is an acclaimed speaker, author, museum/heritage consultant, museum director and volunteer. He is also the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley, an organization committed to the ecological integrity of this mountain region. He is the past President and Chief Executive Officer of the Glenbow Museum, Art Gallery, Library and Archives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, a position he held from 1989-2000. Janes' book Museums in a Troubled World: Renewal, Irrelevance or Collapse? was published by Routledge in 2009.
