Museum Collection Coordinator

North Vancouver Museum & Archives Commission

(approx 1 year - maternity leave)



The North Vancouver Museum and Archives (NVMA), one of BC's leading community museums, is seeking an experienced, conscientious individual to fill the position of Collection Coordinator (maternity leave) for approximately one year. The North Vancouver Museum has a collection of over 17,000 historic artifacts, including objects related to historic Moodyville town site, the development of the waterfront and the shipbuilding industry, outdoor recreation, North Shore households, municipal transportation, local First Nation activities, and notable citizens.



The position: Reporting to the Director, the Museum Collection Coordinator will undertake a variety of museum collection management tasks relating to the care and management of the museum collection. Responsibilities will include implementing NVMA's museum collection and conservation policy and procedures; coordinating and processing new acquisitions and loans in and out according to established procedures; implementing preventive conservation measures including IPM and environment monitoring; responding to public inquiries regarding the museum collection including donations and loans; managing volunteers and temporary staff, including summer students; researching and purchasing supplies within budget parameters; assisting with exhibitions, including coordinating and preparing artifacts and mounts; liaising with other NVMA staff and assisting in NVMA operations as required. Special projects will include clean up of database records according to professional standards and NVMA guidelines after transfer to a new collection management program (PastPerfect); collecting and reviewing documentation of collection to clarify ownership and provenance; implementing a paper file management system according to established parameters; disposal of hazardous materials according to recommended procedures; inventory of selected areas of the collection; and digitization of images (negatives) of collection according to established parameters.



Qualifications: The successful applicant will have completed a bachelor's degree in a related field, one year of post-secondary education in museum collection management (preferred), and two years of relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Excellent knowledge of professional collection management, documentation and database standards and principles, preventive conservation, and artifact care and handling is required. Applicants should possess an interest in community history and museum/archives work; ability to handle, classify, research and catalogue a variety of artifacts; a high degree of computer literacy; ability to maintain accuracy under pressure and deadlines; ability to lift 50 lbs and to climb stairs; effective interpersonal and organizational skills; and excellent written and spoken English language skills. Experience preparing artifact mounts is an asset, as are photography skills and experience with community museum collections and PastPerfect software. Experience supervising temporary staff and volunteers is desirable. A clean British Columbia driver's license is required for this position, as is a criminal record check. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents/landed immigrants, or be in possession of a Work Visa at time of application that is valid for the anticipated period of employment.



Wage: $27.02 per hour (2011 rates), plus a range of benefits after qualifying periods are met.

Work week: 35 hours/week, 9-5, Monday to Friday

Start Date: January 31, 2011.
