Subject: PRESS RELEASE - Nanaimo Museum wins Award of Merit for their Coal Mine Experience
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 4, 2010
The Nanaimo Museum wins Award of Merit for their Coal Mine Experience.
The British Columbia Museums Association honoured the Nanaimo Museum this past weekend with the Museums in Motion 2010 Award of Merit for the Nanaimo Museum’s Coal Mine Experience. Nanaimo Museum GM Debbie Trueman accepted the award on behalf of the museum at the BCMA Awards Banquet on Friday, October 29 in Nanaimo, B.C.
The Coal Mine exhibit opened in July 2010, and is a testament to the innovation, ingenuity and skill set of staff, volunteers and contractors who developed the project over a period of eight months.
The Awards Committee noted how crucial it is for a museum to feel community ownership and this exhibit fulfills that commitment. The museum's recreation of a coal mine is, in the words of a former inspector of mines “impressive”.
Congratulations to all the Nanaimo Museum volunteers and staff who worked to complete this project! And a big thank-you to all our volunteers and Ed Yewchin for his $50,000 donation that made this possible.
The British Columbia Museums Association also honoured General Manager Debbie Trueman with a Distinguished Service Award. The annual award is “given to an individual who has made a unique and substantial contribution on a provincial basis to the museum, art gallery, archives, or heritage fieldover an extended period.” Joyce Hardcastle was on hand to accept the Distinguished Service Award that was awarded posthumously to her husband Barry Hardcastle last year.
