Burnaby Art Gallery Presents
Davida Kidd: Who Needs Art When You Have a View Like This
November 30, 2010 - February 6, 2011

(BURNABY, BC) - Davida Kidd's exhibition at the Burnaby Art Gallery is inspired by a billboard she saw when driving across the Cambie Street Bridge. The banner was located on the site of a newly developing condominium project and exclaimed "Who Needs Art When You Have a View Like This!" The focus of the exhibition will be images that engage in similar biting double entendres. In keeping with Kidd's practice of constructing sets and staging subjects, the artist will create a number of large-scale photographic images that use digital collage to combine multiple objects, images, and views. These views will be based on a spectrum of so-called desirable and less desirable locations in combination with model-sized construction built by Kidd and will be embedded with resonances of varying interior/psychological landscapes.

Curator of the exhibition, Sophie Brodovitch poses these questions to Kidd: "You are a great collector of objects and artifacts. Does this interest come from a particular experience or is it a more nebulous urge? How does living with the objects affect your view and understanding of them?" Kidd responds, "I definitely collect as if I am building a palette for future or current pieces. The pieces take on their creative life as I'm ready for them. Constantly being surrounded by them is like having a whole bunch of exotic tools to choose from. They fuel my subconscious. I am constantly playing around with them and recombining the things I have around me."

Davida Kidd's practice addresses themes of domination: the psyche by the dream or ideal, the conscience by guilt, the personality by passion. Working in the general realm of manipulated photography, she blurs the line between illusion and reality, cultivating the ambiguous moments at which subjects become invented creatures. Kidd further incorporates these ideas by addressing the new strains that have been put on the human psyche. Trying to cope with the rapid changes of living in this technological era is resulting in shared common experiences happening vicariously through a variety of screens in which the real and the imaginary move closer together.
