Visual Trickery - The Art of Photo Manipulation
"Seeing is believing!" Or is it?
The Maritime Museum of BC is proud to announce our newest featured exhibit, Visual Trickery - The Art of Photo Manipulation. This exhibit delves into the technical nature of photography which offers fascinating opportunities for both serious and playful creativity. The core of the exhibition is a traveling exhibit from the Simon Fraser University Gallery, "Prints from CPR Magic Lantern Slides 1885-1930", with 50 colourful enlargements made from original 3" square Magic Lantern slides.
We explore the legacy and impact of these slides of the early 1900s. These early photos began as black and white images captured in chemistry on clear glass plates. But, when tinted by hand with coloured dyes and projected on the wall of a darkened room, became "life-like" pictures in the eyes of the viewers.
Popular in their time, Magic Lantern theatres became the precursor to our modern day cinemas. It was common for these images to be manipulated. As an example, fairies and ghostly figures could be made to appear mysteriously in the projections, invoking shock or awe in the audience. As humans, our eyes and minds have built-in limits of perception, and these can be cleverly used to cause us to think we are seeing something quite different from what is really present.
Manipulated photos may provoke us into believing we know what we are looking at. In this display, we delight in the processes allowing these magical effects to happen.
Visual Trickery is a progressive exhibition that will continually develop until March 2011. As new items on the topic become available, we will include them in the displays. We would also like to invite you, the community to contribute to the exhibit. If you know of something that might be of interest and fitting with the theme, please bring it to the Museum, or let us know about it.
