Philosophers' Café with the Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia

Can Documents Become Monuments? Snapshots in the Digital Age

Vancouver, BC - The Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia welcomes Bill Jeffries for a Philosophers' Cafe discussion of: Can Documents Become Monuments? Snapshots in the Digital Age on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm in the Snider Adult Lounge, located on the 1st floor of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (950 W. 41st Ave, Vancouver).

Time has an impact on everything, but the way it changes the value and meaning of photographs is riddled with inversions. A snapshot of Shakespeare would be a huge monument, if it existed and today's throwaway picture will, similarly, be valuable in several hundred years, if it survives. Today's monuments, conversely, will have deteriorated, and be known to future generations only through documentary evidence. What does this situation have to say about the pictures we take today and how their meaning changes over time?

The Philosophers' Café program is a series of gatherings featuring high level public conversation. No philosophical training or expertise is required. The Philosophers' Café promotes open, meaningful dialogue on the discussion topic, enabling participants to share their own ideas and to broaden their perspective by considering the views of others. No philosophical training or expertise is required.
