This presentation lays the groundwork for appreciation of the
artist-activist Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) by evaluating his masterwork,
his illuminated Passover Haggadah. Drawn and first published during the
rise of Hitler, The Szyk Haggadah is a triumphant work of courage and
hope, its style and themes remarkably prescient and enduringly relevant.
A Polish Jew keenly aware of current events, Arthur Szyk (pronounced
"Shick") fused his two passions-art and history-into a visual commentary
on the dangerous parallel between the Exodus narrative of Egyptian
oppression and alarming developments unfolding in Nazi Germany. Copies
of the new edition of The Szyk Haggadah will be on display and available
for purchase.

 Irvin Ungar is the CEO of the noted firm of antiquarian booksellers
HISTORICANA, which he founded in 1987. A former pulpit rabbi (serving
communities in Forest Hills, NY, and Burlingame, CA), Irvin has become
the tireless force behind the revival of the artist Arthur Szyk, and his
expertise on Szyk is internationally recognized. He has lectured and
consulted worldwide on the Szyk oeuvre at institutions such as: The
Library of Congress; The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in
Washington, DC; The Hebrew University of Jerusalem; and The Jewish
Historical Institute in Warsaw.
