BORDER ZONES: NEW ART ACROSS CULTURES
CLOSING SEPTEMBER 12, 2010!
ONLY SIX DAYS LEFT to view Border Zones: New Art Across Cultures, an exhibit
of contemporary art by twelve Canadian and international artists, including
Hayati Mokhtar and Dain Iskandar Said (Malaysia), John Wynne (UK), Edward
Poitras (Canada), Thamotharampillai Shanaathanan (Sri Lanka), Tania Mouraud
(France), Marianne Nicolson (Canada), Gu Xiong (China), Prabakar Visvanath
(India), Rosanna Raymond (New Zealand), Ron Yunkaporta (Australia), and
Laura Wee Láy Láq (Canada).
In their works, the artists use the idea of border zones to raise questions
about migration and identity, knowledge protection and access, and
cross-cultural exchange. Borders are considered not only as lines or markers
that divide cultures, but also as uncertain spaces that are sites of
encounter and transformation.
Also, be sure to check out http://www.borderzones.ca! Instead of a paper
catalogue, MOA produced an interactive website to accompany the show. Here
youll find video interviews with the 12 participating artists, artworks
exclusive to the zine, provocative reviews of the exhibition, and a blog
devoted to the idea of borders. Feel free to contribute your own thoughts
about the ways in which new ideas and meanings may created and contested at
the boundaries of knowledge, language, art, culture, and politics.
Border Zones: New Art Across Cultures is presented with Vancouver 2010
Cultural Olympiad. Additional sponsors: The Vancouver Foundation, The Canada
Council, Consulat Général de France à Vancouver, Audrey Hawthorn Fund for
Publications in Museum Anthropology, and Alican Mould & Plastics.
