Archives workshops help preserve the past

 

Vancouver, BC - This fall season, the Jewish Museum & Archives of
British Columbia will offer public comprehensive programs on how to care
for and preserve family histories. Whether you are a novice family
historian, interested in gaining tips from a professional archivist, or
thinking of starting your own family archives, these hands-on sessions
will cover a range of topics including caring for your family
photographs, recording oral history interviews, and digitizing
photographs, audio cassettes and videos to create a digital library. 

 

Workshop: Caring for your family photographs

Sunday, September 26, 2010

2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Fee: $25 per person, Jewish Historical Society of BC members receive 10%
off

Have you ever wondered what to do with all those old family photographs
that are stored in drawers, shoe boxes, falling apart photo albums? Did
you know that putting photographs into albums can actually do more
damage to your photos than good? Here is your chance to discover and
learn from a professional archivist how to save your family photos for
future generations. Bring your photographs to the museum for a hands-on
session.

Workshop: Oral History Interviewer Training Workshop

Sunday, October 24, 2010

10:00am to 4:00pm 

Fee: $80.00, refreshments included 

Presented by Jennifer Yuhasz and Irene Dodek

 

This workshop will cover a range of topics including: the differences
between oral history and oral testimony, understanding the role of the
interviewer, preparing for an oral history interview, dealing with
difficult topics in an interview, understanding different interviewing
methodologies, and developing different interviewing skills and
techniques. Participants will receive hands on experience with the JMABC
Marantz PMD 660 Solid State Digital Recorders and practice interviewing
during the workshop.

 

Irene Dodek is experienced in interviewing Holocaust Survivors for the
Shoah Foundation and has been interviewing Jewish Community members for
the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia since 1970. Jennifer
Yuhasz is the Archivist of the Nemetz Jewish Community Archives at the
Jewish Museum & Archives of BC.

Workshop: Digitizing your family photographs

photographs to digital in order to share with family members? What about
preserving those photographs that are already digital? What about old
audio cassettes, or video? Here is your chance to discover and learn
from a professional archivist how to create digital copies of your
family photographs and how to save those digital photographs for future
generations. Bring your photographs to the museum for a hands-on
session.
