Special Lecture Event:

Dr. Leslie Paris presents Jewish Summer Camp history

 

Vancouver, BC - The Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia
welcomes Dr. Leslie Paris for a special lecture presentation titled:
"Summer without camp isn't summer: American Jews and the
Early-Twentieth-Century Summer Camp Movement" on Wednesday, October 6,
2010 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Jewish Museum & Archives of BC (950
W. 41st Avenue, Vancouver, BC).

 

Jewish summer camping is a uniquely North American phenomenon. Although
today we often associate camp with leisure activities, camps have always
served an indispensable purpose in the Jewish community. Originally,
Jewish camps were created to ameliorate the grim conditions of city
life. At the turn of the 20th century, at the height of an unprecedented
influx of European immigrants, settlement houses and social welfare
agencies established retreats across the United States and Canada to
give Jewish children a respite from the teeming urban slums. Some of
these camps were designed to acculturate new immigrants into society. In
Western Canada, camps such as Camp Hatikvah, Camp Miriam, and Camp
Solomon Schechter served to help Jewish youth build friendships with
other Jewish youth; and thereby unify a disparate community.

 

 

About the speaker:

Leslie Paris is Associate Professor of History at the University of
British Columbia. She is the author of Children's Nature: The Rise of
the American Summer Camp (2008) and co-editor of several other books in
American children's history, including The Girls' History and Culture
Reader (forthcoming 2011).
