JOB POSTING

 

The Fraser River Discovery Centre, in New Westminster, BC, is a
newly-expanded interpretive centre that connects visitors to the River's
history, environments, industry, people and communities. The FRDC, operating
as a non-profit society, is a hands-on interpretive centre with the mission
to be recognized as a Centre of Excellence for stimulating passion,
education, and enlightenment about the Fraser River, taking a key leadership
role in enhancing the health and sustainability of the Fraser River. The
centre is looking for a Summer Interpreter – Reception.

 

Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director through the Education Coordinator,
Interpreters are responsible for the interpretation of the Fraser River to
FRDC visitors and are also responsible for visitor reception including
answering public inquiries, registering program bookings and collecting
fees, gift shop operations, maintaining the safety and security of FRDC
facility, contents, and visitors and reporting building maintenance needs to
the Operations Assistant.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Interpretation of the Fraser River to FRDC visitors, answering
inquiries about the Fraser River, past and present information related to
geography, cultural tradition, ecology, economy, industry, history and
environment.

·         visitor reception and answering public inquiries about FRDC hours
of operation, location, exhibition and program information, and related
matters 

·         maintaining the safety and security of FRDC buildings, contents,
and visitors,

*	Perform other related duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

*	Applicant must have been a full time student during the last
academic year and be returning to full time study in the fall 2011

·         Completion of high school degree, post secondary education
preferred. 

*	Interest in history, tourism, environmental science, and/or
education and working in a cultural setting;
*	Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and
written;
*	Proven customer service skills and enjoys working with the public;
*	Working knowledge of retail shop procedures 
*	Experience working with volunteers and in the non-profit sector is
also desirable;
*	Willingness and ability to work both independently and in a team
environment.
*	Language of work: English. Second language an asset 

 

    POSITION IS DEPENDENT ON GRANT FUNDING

 

HOURS:            Part-time, 30 hours per week, 9:30 – 4:00 (with occasional
evening hours) Wednesday to Sun or Friday to Tuesday
RATE:   $10.25/ hr plus 4% in lieu of vacation
