Fraser River Discovery Centre Cultivates New Exhibit - Plants Alive!

New Westminster, BC - What do you know about the plants in your garden? On
Saturday, April 30, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm join us at the Fraser River
Discovery Centre as we explore the wonderful array of native plants that
grow in the Fraser River Basin with the official opening of our newest
exhibit - Plants Alive!: Native Plants of the Fraser River Basin.

Native plants have evolved over thousands of years to thrive in specific
local conditions. Gardening with native plants celebrates the uniqueness of
specific regions. With its incredibly geographically diverse landscape of
alpine mountain tops, dry deserts, craggy canyon walls and rich mudflats,
the Fraser River Basin is home to hundreds of native plant species. Kathleen
Bertrand, Exhibit Coordinator says, "When I began researching for this
exhibit, I had no idea of the diversity of native plants we have here in the
basin. The exhibit will feature a selection of live plants and I am thrilled
we are trying to grow these inside the centre as part of the exhibit."

Plants Alive! uses examples from across the basin to educate visitors about
how plants work and how we use plants in our day-to-day lives. Bertrand
continues, "Although we have lots of resources for people who want to
incorporate native plants in their home gardens, the majority of the exhibit
is directed at children. I'm really excited to see kids getting their hands
dirty and discovering native plants."

Visitors of all ages are invited to attend the opening of Plants Alive!
Following a brief opening ceremony and introduction, visitors will have an
opportunity to enjoy light refreshments while checking out the greenhouse,
planting native seeds, investigating Seedling Corner and discovering how
native plants can bring their garden to life! To encourage visitors to
incorporate native plants into their communities and gardens, the first 50
visitors will receive a native seedling to plant in their garden.

Plants Alive! was developed in partnership with the Native Plant Society of
BC, the Invasive Plant Council of BC and Evergreen with support from the
Stanley Park Ecology Centre Society and the Van Dusen Botanical Garden
Association and funded in part by an environmental grant from the City of
New Westminster. Plants Alive! will be on display until June 2012.
