Position Title:              Archival-Curatorial Assistant

Position Type:              Full time, fourteen week position

Background:


The BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is a not-for-profit society, founded
in 1966 to establish a permanent tribute to the outstanding individuals,
teams, and builders of sport in the Province. The BC Sports Hall of Fame is
staffed by a team of six with a volunteer Board of Trustees who provide
strategic direction to the Society. The BC Sports Hall of Fame is located in
BC Place Stadium and has 20,000 square feet of exciting exhibits displaying
the passion and commitment of British Columbia's athletes and teams.
Visitors are able to share the vision of those who achieved their dreams
through dedication, talent and hard work. The BC Sports Hall of Fame is the
ideal place for families, groups, and tourists to visit. More information is

Due to the construction of the new roof at BC Place Stadium, the BC Sports
Hall of Fame is currently not open to the public. During this unique time we
continue to organize and host our annual golf tournament and induction
ceremonies (Banquet of Champions) while we undertake a new BC Sports Hall of
Fame Community Outreach program. This involves sharing components of the
museum collection and educational programming with communities across BC.
The Museum will be re-opening to the public in November 2011 and is
currently planning and working on the establishment of the Vancouver 2010
Gallery - Celebrating the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.



Position Overview:

The BC Sports Hall of Fame is offering an exciting opportunity to become a
member of our team, dedicated to serving the organization's mission of
Honouring the Past and Inspiring the Future. Reporting to the Director of
Operations, and working closely with the curator, the Archival-Curatorial
Assistant will be assisting the Working Committee of the Vancouver 2010
Gallery with a variety of tasks. Work will also include supporting the BC
Sports Hall of Fame's community outreach program as required. 

 

The Curatorial-Archival Assistant fulfills a key role within the BC Sports
Hall of Fame and Museum. The mission of the BC Sports Hall of Fame and
Museum is to "Honour the Past and Inspire the Future". The
Curatorial-Archival Assistant will perform many tasks within the
organization. Key responsibilities include:

.         Attending Working and Planning Committee meeting - be recording
secretary

.         Assist in the cataloguing of incoming donations of BC sport
archival items and artifacts donations, specifically for the Vancouver 2010
Gallery

.         Assist in the general care and handling of the BC Sports Hall of
Fame archives and collection

.         Assist with various research projects - in particular support the
work required for the storyline development of the Vancouver 2010 Gallery

.         Respond to requests for research and photos from the public using
both telephone and email

.         Support Director of Operations and Curator as required

 

The Archival-Curatorial Assistant is joining a staff team of six and will be
involved in many areas of the operations. We are seeking a candidate who is
passionate about sport and sport history, in particular the Vancouver 2010
Games. The successful candidate will ideally be a university or college
student with the intentions of continuing with their studies history, social
studies or museum studies. The successful candidate must possess good
verbal, written and computer skills; excellent interpersonal skills. An
interest in sport, history, and museums is required and previous knowledge
of archives, artifact collections, care and handling, cleaning methods and
safety techniques is considered an asset. This position will require
considerable attention to detail, procedures and record keeping.

 

The BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum cares for the province's sporting
heritage. By joining our staff team the successful candidate will show the
drive and desire to join our organization and to take it to its highest
potential. 

 


Candidate Profile:


As a staff member of the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, the
Archival-Curatorial Assistant will learn many valuable skills and experience
a unique work environment. Specific skills the job experience will help to
develop include:

.         Verbal, written, and computer communication 

.         Organization and time management

.         Group and individual work

.         Collection care and handling 

.         Appreciation and understanding of BC sport heritage

.         Research for displays, reports, website, and museum programming 

.         Exhibit planning

 

The successful candidate must: 

.         Be legally entitled to work in Canada; 

.         Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status
in Canada; 

.         Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;

.         Be a full-time student with intentions of returning to full-time
studies in September. 

.         Be comfortable in a busy environment and be able to handle many
different tasks.

.         Be able to work flexible hours including some evenings, weekends
and holidays.

.         Be comfortable in a busy environment and be able to handle many

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

.         Commitment to a high level of professionalism and the ability to
deliver exceptional customer service is mandatory

.         Excellent interpersonal communication skills, able to relate well
with the public, children, Honoured Members, staff members, and volunteers.

.         Proficiency in Microsoft Windows programs is an asset

.         Experience working with the public, museums or children is an
asset

.         Interest or knowledge of sport or history is an asset

 


Orientation Supervision:


 

A basic outline of the Archival-Curatorial Assistant's training includes the
following:

.         General orientation of the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum

.         Orientation package of all relevant resources for exhibits, basic
history  daily tasks

.         Overview of all safety procedures

.         Supervised by Director of Operations, Curator, and ultimately the
President and CEO


 


Compensation for the position is $11.50 per hour. We thank all candidates

* This position is dependent on funding from the Government of Canada's
Young Canada Works in Heritage Program, administered by the Canadian Museums
Association (CMA).  Thus, the successful candidate must meet the following
criteria: legally entitled to work in Canada be a Canadian citizen,
permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada be between the ages of
16 and 30 be returning to school in the fall (2011).
