Institute Celebrates the Publication of Judie Steeves Long Awaited Cookbook
Judie Steeves is an award winning writer whose recipes have been published in a food column called "From Jude's Kitchen" appearing in the Kelowna Capital News and Country Life in BC over the past dozen years. The Okanagan Institute is proud to announce that the best of her recipes have now been collected into a book which is sure to become a enduring favourite of cooks in the Okanagan and beyond. From the coast of British Columbia to the wilds of the Cariboo and the orchards and vineyards of the Okanagan - Jude's Kitchen contains 200 recipes including adaptations of traditional dishes from family and friends, with a focus on using fresh, local ingredients, in season to produce nutritious, simple, good food all year long.
This long awaited cookbook focuses on using local and in-season ingredients to prepare simple and delicious recipes for every season of the year. It takes cooks from the first sprouts of spring through the bounty of summer fruits and vegetables, autumn harvest and the comfort foods of winter. The book spans the range of regional cuisines from the bounty of the Pacific Ocean to the berries of the Fraser Valley, the whole grains of the Peace region, the beef and lamb of the Cariboo rangelands and the cornucopia provided by the orchards and vineyards of the Okanagan.
These simple to make recipes include starters, soups, entrees and desserts - all perfect for the family and for casual entertaining. As an added bonus, well known wine writer John Schreiner has contributed wine pairing notes that accompany many of the recipes.
On Thursday, April 28th between 4 and 6 pm the ongoing Okanagan Institute Express series at the BC Wine Museum, 1304 Ellis Street, Kelowna presents Jude's Kitchen: Celebrating BC's Seasons of Abundance. Join us to celebrate the publication of the quintessential BC cookbook, drawn from the hundreds of recipes published by one of Canada's pre-eminent cooking writers, and a true Okanagan treasure.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase - and signing by the author - at the event, for $29.95. It is an 8 x 10 inch, 224 page paperback, with colour photographs throughout. It is sure to become a treasured, and well used, addition to many Okanagan and BC kitchen libraries.
Judie Steeves has been writing a weekly full-page tabloid cooking column, ">From Jude's Kitchen", for the Kelowna Capital News for 12 years and for Country Life in BC for the past seven years. She is an experienced journalist who specializes in writing about food and agriculture, as well as the outdoors. She is co-author, with Murphy Shewchuk, of Okanagan Trips and Trails published by Fitzhenry and Whiteside. She lives in Kelowna, BC.
"I frequently get calls from readers asking where they can pick up my book and one has even offered to help me put one together! I've lived in different areas of B.C., so my recipes reflect that, with fresh seafood and fish from the coast, blueberries and fresh produce from the Fraser Valley, wild game meats and fresh breads from the wilderness and a wood cook stove I used while we lived in the Cariboo, and the fresh fruits, wines and herbs from the Okanagan where I grew up and have lived for the past 27 years or so.
I am not a chef. I am not a nutritionist. I am not a nurse or a fitness instructor. I am a writer, a mom, a grandmother and a gardener who loves to eat good food and serve it to others who appreciate fresh flavours. Some of the recipes are simply traditional old favourites passed down in the family, but ones which I know my grown kids, for instance, would like to have. This book is my legacy to them, and to others who like to cook and appreciate eating healthy, flavourful food." - Judie Steeves
This special book launch event is generously sponsored by the BC Wine Museum and Gray Monk Estate Winery.
