9th annual Richmond-Delta Regional Heritage Fair
An exploration of Canadian heritage and traditions
Richmond, BC - Last year, as part of a national initiative, more than
150,000 students across Canada participated in the Heritage Fairs
program. This year, over 75 student projects will be on display at the
local level for the 9th annual Richmond-Delta Regional Heritage Fair.
History showcased through the eyes of Richmond's youth will be free for
public viewing at the Richmond Cultural Centre on Saturday, May 7, from
10 a.m.-3 p.m.
"Our students' enthusiasm to tell the story of Richmond's heritage is
truly inspiring," Mayor Malcolm Brodie expressed. "The Fair will present
a fresh view of the past, and I encourage the community to further
familiarize themselves with Richmond's rich history."
The Heritage Fair is a bilingual educational initiative, encouraging
students to explore Canadian history and heritage in a dynamic, hands-on
learning environment. The Fair actively involves students, schools,
heritage organizations, businesses and community groups in a
"contemporary celebration of discovered traditions and events." Through
the medium of their choice, students display stories that portray
Canadian heroes, legends, milestones and achievements. Projects are to
be presented not only to the general public, but also to a panel of
judges.
Of the twenty-three judges in total, the Fair's Richmond judges include:
* Joe Clemente (Teacher, McRoberts Secondary)
* Eric Fiss (Public Art Planner, City of Richmond)
* Michele Haapamaki and Ray Holme (Members, Richmond Heritage
Commission)
* Linda McPhail (Trustee, Richmond School Board)
* Gordon Powell (Coordinator for Library and Information
Services, Richmond School Board)
* Kim Somerville (Manager of Arts Services, City of Richmond)
* Sandi Swanigan (Major Events Development Manager, City of
Richmond)
* Barbara Williams (Board Member, London Heritage Farm Society)
Students participating are from the following schools: Cornerstone
Christian Academy, Gilmore Elementary, Kingswood Elementary, McKay
Elementary, McNeely Elementary, McRoberts Secondary, Whiteside
Elementary, and Woodward Elementary, along with a home-schooled student.
These students have presented their projects to their school bodies and
will be representing Richmond at the Fair. This celebration of Canadian
heritage will have a lasting impact on all who attend, and members of
the community are encouraged to show their support.
