BURNABY, BC - As part of the closing celebrations of the immensely popular drawing exhibition The Solitudes of Place: Recent Drawings by Ann Kipling the Burnaby Art Gallery will release a limited number of signed copies of the long awaited exhibition catalogue. On Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 1 pm artist Ann Kipling and Burnaby Art Gallery director Darrin Martens will host a book signing session at the Burnaby Art Gallery to acknowledge this important event. Copies of the book will be available that day or through pre-orders by calling 604.297.4422. The cost of the hard cover, 144 page, and fully illustrated book is $52.95.
The Solitudes of Place: Recent Drawings by Ann Kipling book contains over 141 colour plates and essays by art historian Rosemarie Tovell, critic and independent curator Robin Laurence and Burnaby Art Gallery director/curator Darrin Martens. Rosemarie Tovell's essay explores Kipling's practice as a draftsperson within a Canadian art historical context and her importance as a drawer and pursuer of form. Laurence offers a different view of Kipling and her drawing - one which explores her work as a manifestation of "attentiveness" both as an observer of the world and a practitioner of art. Martens explores this intensely creative period within Kipling's career through the lens of locality and its place within a larger philosophical framework. "I was interested in thinking about and looking at Ann Kipling's drawings in a different way," notes exhibition curator Darrin Martens, "the opportunity to explore and analyze one year's worth of work by an artist is unique. Taking full advantage of this occasion allowed me and my fellow authors to question Kipling's connection with the landscape, her drawing techniques and ways in which she looks and reacts to what she sees before her."
The Solitudes of Place: Recent Drawings by Ann Kipling is both an artist book and a catalogue of an exhibition held at the Burnaby Art Gallery. The intent of the publication is to provide alternative perspectives on Kipling as an artist and create a forum in which to think about and experience her work now and into the future.
