Are Comics the Most Jewish Medium?

The Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia presents a Philosophers' Café discussion of "Are comics the most Jewish medium?" on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. The café will take place at the Peretz Centre for Secular Jewish Culture <http://www.peretz-centre.org/> .  Admission is by donation. Everyone is welcome.

Topic: Are comics the most Jewish medium?

Guest moderator: Miriam Libicki

 

It is possible that the blueprints for the modern autobiographical comic have been hidden in Jewish tradition for millennia. From Art Spiegelman to Will Eisner, Aline Kominsky to Harvey Pekar, Jewish artists have adopted the comic-book format as a medium of personal expression. Do Jewish comic books challenge the prohibition of graven images? Or do they advance the artistic tradition of the Jewish people? We will explore these questions and more.

 

 Miriam Libicki is an American-Israeli based in Vancouver, BC. She completed her Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree from Emily Carr University in 2006, where she currently teaches a class on graphic memoir. She is the creator of the comic series Jobnik! and the drawn essays Towards a Hot Jew, Ceasefire, Fierce Ease and Jewish Memoir Goes Pow! Zap! Oy!
