Fashion show and fundraiser features art by Daphne Odjig

August 16, 2011 - Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to
announce a fundraising event on Friday, September 9, 2011, from 7 to 9
pm, featuring the Western Canada launch of Sheila Keighron's Genesis
line of women's clothing, inspired by the art of one of Canada's most
celebrated artists, Daphne Odjig. Exclusive to the Kelowna Art Gallery,
this event is a launch for Genesis into both Canada's fashion scene, as
well as the Canadian art world. 

These fashions, by award-winning designer Sheila Keighron, subtly
incorporate and pay homage to the art of Daphne Odjig. The Genesis Fall
2011 collection utilizes the finest Italian wools, cashmeres, and silks,
carefully sourced. Each piece is individually designed by Keighron, and
was made in Canada.  Her long and close friendship with the artist
inspired the designer to create the Genesis collection, which includes
many pieces, from soft, flowing full-length coats, to scarves infused 

with the wonderful colours of Odjig's art. 

Born in 1919 in Ontario, Daphne Odjig has received numerous accolades
for her art, including an appointment to the Order of Canada, an
election to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art, a National Aboriginal
Achievement Award, and she has recently had her work featured on four
stamps issued by Canada Post. 

"We are delighted and honoured to be working with our partners on this
fundraising event," says Kelowna Art Gallery Executive Director, Nataley
Nagy. "Daphne Odjig is one of Canada's most beloved artists, and we are
so pleased that Sheila Keighron's Genesis collection will make its
western Canadian debut at the Gallery." 

The Kelowna Art Gallery will also install an exhibition of selected
works by Daphne Odjig in the Front Project Space from Wednesday,
September 7 to Sunday, September 18, 2011. This is a rare opportunity
for the public to view works by an internationally recognized artist of
this calibre in our community. This exhibition is free to the public.
The art of Daphne Odjig is available through Hambleton Galleries in
Kelowna, who has represented her since 1978.

A limited number of tickets have been printed for the fashion show and
can now be purchased at the Kelowna Art Gallery, or online at

is $45 for Gallery members, and $50 for non-members. Ticket price
includes admission, the fashion show, two complimentary beverages from
Tantalus Vineyards, plus light appies and sweets. The Kelowna Art
Gallery is pleased to work with Tantalus Vineyards as the exclusive wine
sponsor for this event.

Daphne Odjig is a Canadian artist of Aboriginal ancestry. She was born
September 11, 1919 and raised on the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve
on Manitoulin Island (Lake Huron), Ontario. Daphne Odjig is the daughter
of Dominic Odjig and Joyce Peachey. Her father and her grandfather,
Chief Jonas Odjig, were Potawatomi, descended from the great chief Black
Partridge. Her mother was an English war bride. The Odjig family was
among the Potawatomi who migrated north and settled in Wikwemikong after
the War of 1812. The Potawatomi (Keepers of the Fire) were members with
the Ojibwa and Odawa, of the Three Fires Confederacy of 

the Great Lakes. Daphne now lives and works in Penticton, BC.
