The University of Victoria is introducing a new online Graduate Professional Certificate in Cultural Heritage Studies for museum and heritage professionals in May 2012 -- a website describing the structure, content and admission procedures for this innovative and accessible online program will be posted in early September. In the meantime, we are seeking expressions of interest from distinguished cultural heritage scholars and professionals to work with us in the development of two key online courses. Thank you for sharing these calls for expressions of interest with your members and colleagues:
*******************
The Cultural Heritage Management Program, offered by the Faculty of Fine Arts in cooperation with the Division of Continuing Studies at the University of Victoria, invites expressions of interest from cultural heritage specialists to develop one of two graduate-level online courses, noted below.
CH 560 Cultural Heritage Stewardship and Sustainability (1.5 units)
Calendar Description: This course explores cultural heritage in all its diverse forms, along with the critical roles it plays in defining, reinforcing and contributing to a sustainable world. It discusses the scope and meaning of cultural heritage resources in contemporary society, and analyzes how diverse approaches to the conservation, access to and management of cultural heritage are continuing to evolve in response to philosophical changes and social, economic, cultural and environmental needs.
We are seeking an expert content specialist and dynamic instructor with a distinguished academic and professional background, who holds specialized knowledge of the scope and roles of cultural heritage, key concepts of values-based stewardship, and contemporary sustainability challenges. The successful candidate will be familiar with current issues and developments in the museum and heritage sectors, and professionally involved in museum and/or heritage conservation practice. Course development is undertaken to meet a series of deadlines between September 2011 and April 2012, for online delivery in the Summer term, May-July 2012.
CH 570 Heritage Conservation in Context (1.5 units)
Calendar Description: This course addresses the complex range of principles and practices that influence heritage preservation and conservation planning and decision-making. The implications of international and national charters, principles, standards and guidelines, are discussed, along with legal, programmatic and financial incentives and constraints.
We are seeking an expert content specialist and dynamic instructor with a distinguished academic and professional background, who holds specialized knowledge of the range of international, national and local principles and regulations that guide heritage conservation practice. The successful candidate will be familiar with current issues and developments in the heritage sector, and professionally involved in heritage/planning networks. Course development is undertaken to meet a series of deadlines between September 2011 and June 2012, for online delivery in the Fall term, September - December 2012.
Involvement as a content specialist in either course involves the development of curriculum and instructional materials in collaboration with Cultural Heritage Management staff and the University’s Distance Education Services to create engaging graduate-level online learning experiences for professionals from Canada and beyond, as well as for graduate students in related degree programs. Candidates should hold a PhD or minimum Masters-level education with substantial knowledge and skills in a related discipline, along with significant and recent professional experience working within the cultural heritage sector, have university-level and/or professional teaching experience, and demonstrate experience in written academic and professional communications. Further information on course scope and learning objectives can be obtained from Joy Davis, Program Director, joydavis at uvic.ca.
While course development and instruction are two separate appointments, it is anticipated (and preferable) that the successful candidates will undertake both components. The stipend for course development is $6000 (CDN). The stipend for course delivery is determined on the basis of academic credentials and prior academic teaching experience.
A letter of interest, a CV outlining relevant education, professional, teaching and writing/publishing experience, and the names and contact information of two references should be sent by September 6, 2011 to:
