Philosopher's Café ON December 14, 2011 FROM 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
The Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia presents a Philosophers' Café discussion of "Occupy Judaism: Jewish Teachings on Economic Equality" on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the Peretz Centre for Secular Jewish Culture.
Is it possible that this year's "Occupy Wall Street" movement has strong connections to the Torah? From the Torah's vision of a just society to its views on regulated capitalism, years of rest and reset, and interest-free loans, this timely discussion will explore these questions, similarities, and more.
RABBI LAURA DUHAN-KAPLAN, PhD., M.A., M.Ed., B.A., is Professor Emerita of Philosophy at UNC Charlotte and the Rabbi for Or Shalom Synagogue in Vancouver. Duhan-Kaplan is the winner of many Canadian and American teaching awards and also serves as Dean of Students and Vice Chair of the Board for the ALEPH Rabbinic Program. Rabbi Laura Duhan Kaplan grew up in Kew Gardens, New York, with Conservadox Judaism as her natural habitat.
The JMABC's ongoing Philosophers' Café program is a series of gatherings that feature civic conversations and high-level moderators. Topics are generated with the goal of engaging the heart and mind of philosophers and non-philosophers alike. Themes are designed to spark dialogue and thought, and to speak to the heart of the community and the pursuit of the individual.
The JMABC Philosophers' Café series is presented in collaboration with Simon Fraser University Department of Continuing Studies. Join us on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 for "Occupy Judaism: Jewish Teachings on Economic Equality." Admission is by donation. Everyone is welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
