Art exhibition with a focus on landscape to open in Kelowna

David Alexander: The Shape of Place

On view from January 14 to March 25, 2012 at the Kelowna Art Gallery

December 6, 2011 - Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition by an artist whose work has received international critical attention and acclaim. David Alexander: The Shape of Place is comprised of paintings, works on paper, and sketchbooks from the last three decades of the artist's career, depicting such varied locales as the Canadian Arctic, Iceland, the prairies, and the Rocky Mountains. David Alexander: The Shape of Place will be on view at the Kelowna Art Gallery from January 14 to March 25, 2012, before beginning a national tour in 2013. 

Alexander is a nationally known artist working with the landscape who retired to the Okanagan to live and work after spending twenty-three years in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Originally from BC, Alexander has travelled the world, experiencing and interpreting landscape as he has hiked and boated through it. 

Accompanying the exhibition is a full-colour, full-length, multi-authored book on Alexander's art. The six authors are critic Robert Enright, award-winning Canadian author Sharon Butala, Aðalsteinn Ingólfsson, Ihor Holubizky, the late Gilbert Bouchard, and Kelowna Art Gallery Curator, Liz Wylie. The Kelowna Art Gallery has partnered with the prestigious McGill-Queen's University Press as the publisher and distributor of this book, which will also be available for sale at the Kelowna Art Gallery. 

An opening reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held on Friday, January 13, 2012, from 7 to 9 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Prior to the reception, the artist will lead a talk and tour of the exhibition at 6:30 pm. Admission to these events is free, and both are open to members and guests, by invitation. David Alexander: The Shape of Place opens to the public on January 14, 2012, and will be on view through March 25, 2012 at the Kelowna Art Gallery.
