*Re: Canada Summer Jobs*
I am writing to encourage you to apply for funding to hire students this
summer from Canada Summer Jobs 2011 ahead of the February 28 deadline,
and also to offer some *advice for improving your chances of a
successful application*.
Canada Summer Jobs provides funding for not-for-profit, public-sector
and small private-sector employers to hire young people aged 15 to 30
who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in the
next school year. After years of persistent advocacy by me and my NDP
colleague Tony Martin, funding for this year's program will be increased
by $10 million nationally, to $107.5 million, with Victoria's share
representing $24,646, for a total of $357,399.
Still, Victoria is one of the most over-subscribed ridings in the
country for the Canada Summer Jobs program. As a result, even very good
applications are rejected. There is a much higher chance of success if
your application closely fits with the program criteria, and these
*local priorities for Victoria*:
·Local special events initiated by local community organizations
·Urban Aboriginal communities
·Environmental programs, initiatives and workplaces emphasizing skills
in energy conservation, habitat protection, ecosystem restoration and
environmental assessments, audits and/or home retrofits
·Jobs that support social services (i.e. childcare, poverty, seniors'
services, literacy, citizenship, youth-at-risk and community building)
·Jobs that build on healthy outdoor activities for children and youth,
such as kayaking, hiking and cycling
·Jobs that promote civic engagement, e.g. law centre student internship
·Jobs that support the creative industries and visual and performing
arts, including dance, theatre, music, festivals, etc.
·Skilled shortage areas such as skilled trades in high-tech sector and
health sciences, etc.
I also understand that, in all cases, applications will be viewed more
favourably if they propose *"career-building jobs"* that are likely to
provide the skills and experience necessary future employment.
