Richard is on the right track, but has missed a turn: it the BC govenment that should create a "Maritime Museum of the Pacific", just as Nova Scotia has done for the "Atlantic'. In the later case, they have loactions at both Halifax and Lunenburg, whereas BC can combine the one in Victoria with the Vancouver Maritime Museum.
In fact, the Nova Scotia solution for provincial museums is superior to BC in a fundamental way. There they took an omnibus approach that gathered historic sites, houses, museums, and archives under one confederated operation, thereby ensuring economies of scale, consistant museological standards, survival of key historical elements, and a system largely safeguarded from either political whim or bureaucratic grinding.
Presently it is too much to ask the Province to raise itself from its procrustian bed and embark upon such a major journey, but a first step would be to ensure the Maritime Museum of BC is placed in the CPSS terminal. That it could do fairly easily, though at a significant cost.

How is Bob Wright's "high tech" version different from Mel Cooper's ill fated $20-million B.C. Experience which opened its doors on June 26, 2006, hailed as one of the "Top 10 new attractions in Canada", only to close for good. On Sept. 29? Victoria visitors do not want to see "attractions", they want to see our history and how that history relates to their own experiences. British Columbia has a rich maritime history which ties it to every other seafaring Nation. The historic CPR Steamship Terminal presents the Province with an opportunity to showcase this history as well as the part that Canada now in World maritime and marine affairs. Now is the time to work with the Federal Government in establishing a wholly new Maritime Museum of the Pacific
