Wednesday, March 16, 2011: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Topic: Lost in translation? What are we missing when we read the Bible in English?
Guest moderator: Dr. Robert Daum, Vancouver School of Theology
As Joel M. Hoffman observes in his recent book, And God Said: How Translations Conceal the Bible's Original Meaning (New York, 2010), translating a famous phrase in the Song of Songs as "my sister, my bride" is likely to strike many readers as both unromantic and illegal! In this discussion we will explore a few translation "howlers." We also will consider what is lost and what is gained in various English translations of the Hebrew Bible. Finally, we will reflect on the project of biblical translation altogether.
About the moderator:
Dr. Robert Daum is the Director of Iona Pacific: Inter-Religious Centre for Social Action, Research and Contemplative Practice, and Associate Professor of Rabbinic Literature and Jewish Thought at Vancouver School of Theology. His research and publications include studies of Jewish identity, gender, ethics, rabbinic literature, comparative religion, religious authority, pluralism and inter-religious dialogue, religious origin narratives, and critical theory.
The Philosophers' Café is a series of gatherings featuring high level public conversation. No philosophical training or expertise is required. The Philosopher's Café promotes open, meaningful dialogue on the discussion topic, enabling participants to share their own ideas and to broaden their perspective by considering the views of others. The Philosophers' Cafe program is presented in collaboration with the Department of Continuing Education at Simon Fraser University.
