FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts Presents Women In Fish - A Tough and Touching Survival Journey that is Ultimately about Community
BURNABY, BC - The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in association with urban ink productions proudly presents Women in Fish on Thursday, March 5th at 8pm at the Shadbolt Centre's Studio theatre.
Women in Fish is ostensibly based on the true story of a ship-wreck survivor but in the telling is also a snapshot of the family and community intimately connected to B.C.'s West Coast Fishing industry. Galiano Island residents are still affected by the tragic events of 1962 when lives were lost at sea as their fishing vessel sank during a freak storm leaving a lone survivor - an expectant mother, wife of one of the deceased who survived in the frigid waters for over 8 hours before being rescued.
"As it does in every community, and often with alarming swiftness, tragedy struck our
island last week as yet another saga of the sea was written just off the shores of Galiano
in the Straight of Georgia."
The Gulf Islander 1962
Originally created as a radio play in 2004 by urban ink productions in association with CBC Radio and Playwrights Workshop Montreal, Women in Fish, was written by long-time Galiano Island habitués Marie Clements and Rosemary Georgeson along with survivor, Eileen Lorenz, and many other Island residents. Inspired by the true surviving story of Eileen Lorenz, and how a community of women listening to the MAYDAY, concerning another's life in peril, was able to hear their own diminished voices.
The severe decimation of the West Coast fishing industry over the past ten years has had an immediate and life-threatening impact on many women who supported the economy through fishing themselves with their husbands and families and those who worked in the canneries. Women in Fish is a deeply personal journey; it's also a revelation into a community deeply distressed and it's unflinching in its response to the near-death of a West Coast tradition and source of livelihood for First Nations, Aboriginal, and many European settlers who all relied on the fishing industry.
Originally conceived and directed by Marie Clements and Kathleen Flaherty. Live Animation Directed by Diane Roberts. Performance by Rosemary Georgeson. Award-winning designers include Tim Matheson, Noah Drew and John Webber. Original musical score by Sandy Scofield. Urban ink production society is a BC-based professional theatre company founded in 2001. The company creates, develops and produces Aboriginal and diverse cultural works of theatre, utilizing an integrated approach which embraces polydisciplines, including authentic story-telling, dance, music, video and multi-media to create a new theatre sensibility.
