Dear Media Partners and Kelowna Art Gallery Supporters:
Attached, please find a media release regarding the opening of our new exhibition Printmaking at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia. This exhibition showcases the works of third-year printmaking students from the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus, and is a result of the strong relationship between the Gallery and UBCO.
The opening of the exhibition coincides with another exhibition currently on view - Doug Biden: Visceral Allegories, which is a posthumous survey show of the late artists' works in printmaking. Biden was a printmaking instructor at UBCO, a talented printmaker and a much-beloved local artist. In addition, much of the public programming currently offered at the Gallery on the weekends centres around the techniques of printmaking. Information about the Biden exhibition or the public programming options is available upon request.
I will be following up in the coming days to gauge interest in covering this new exhibition and the importance of the work UBCO and the Kelowna Art Gallery are doing to support local art students. Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions or to arrange an interview with representatives of the Gallery or UBCO.
REMINDER: Opening Reception for Printmaking at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia will be held this Friday, January 14, 2011 from 7-9 pm at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Opening Receptions are FREE and open to the public; please join us! Invite is attached in PDF.

UBCO Printmaking Students' works on view at Kelowna Art Gallery
Opening reception January 14; on view January 15 to March 6, 2011
January 12, 2011 - Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition featuring the works of third-year printmaking students from the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Printmaking at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia is coordinated by Briar Craig, Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia Okanagan, and Renée Burgess, Head of Public Programming at the Kelowna Art Gallery. The exhibition will be on view at the Kelowna Art Gallery from January 15 through March 6, 2011. An opening reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held this Friday, January 14, 2011 from 7-9 pm at the Kelowna Art Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public.
Printmaking at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia is a result of the vital partnership between the Kelowna Art Gallery and the University of British Columbia Okanagan. "The Kelowna Art Gallery and the University of British Columbia Okanagan collaborate as often as we can, working together to support students," says Renée Burgess, Head of Public Programming at the Kelowna Art Gallery. "We are firmly committed to fostering the talents of local art students."
In preparing for the exhibition, students learn the key components of showing works in a professional manner. By participating in this exhibition, the students gain valuable experience in curating and installing their work.
The techniques of printmaking have been in existence for centuries, being explored by artists such as Rembrandt, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, and Andy Warhol. Today printmaking takes many different forms, from low-tech and traditional to requiring the use of extremely specialized equipment and expertise which require equipment and materials that are not affordable or available to many people. Luckily, post-secondary art programs, printmaking cooperatives, or art galleries offering print-specific programming provide a solution to these financial barriers.
Printmaking at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia opens to the public on January 15 and is on view through March 6, 2011. The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in the heart of the Cultural District in Downtown Kelowna. For hours of operation, public programs, or more information about current exhibitions, visit the Kelowna Art Gallery online at www.kelownaartgallery.com <http://www.kelownaartgallery.com/> .
