For Immediate Release

John Kissick: A Nervous Decade makes stop on national tour in Kelowna

Opening reception Friday, February 4 from 7-9 pm; exhibition on view
from February 5 to May 8, 2011

January 25, 2011 - Kelowna, BC: Opening soon at the Kelowna Art Gallery
is a ten-year survey show of works by an Ontario-based artist that is
sure to give the viewers' eyes and minds a much-needed boost of energy
in the dull gray of winter. John Kissick: A Nervous Decade features
whacky, zany and incredibly colourful large-scale works. The exhibition
has been organized by the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery in partnership
with the Kelowna Art Gallery, and is currently on a national tour.

John Kissick: A Nervous Decade is a ten-year survey of the artist's
work, beginning in 2001 with large, relatively somber works in oil on
plywood. Viewers may notice that as the decade unfolds, Kissick's
paintings become increasingly complex and more brightly coloured. The
trend culminates in the artist's seven-foot-tall canvases from 2009,
which hover in a zone between pure abstraction and recognizable
references to the real world. In this aspect, the works make reference
to the mash-up component of contemporary popular culture. Kissick's
works are hybrids that are both self-contained yet laden with references
to various formal issues that painters in the modern period have faced
and worked through in their art.

A prolific artist, John Kissick also writes about art and is the Head of
the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph in Ontario.
"John Kissick is an intelligent and challenging artist," says Liz Wylie,
Curator at the Kelowna Art Gallery. "We are pleased to have partnered
with the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery to bring these provocative and
engaging works to our city."

An opening reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held Friday,
February 4, 2011, from 7-9 pm at the Kelowna Art Gallery. The artist
will be present at the opening reception, which is free and open to the
public. The Gallery will also host an artist talk given by John Kissick
on Thursday, February 3 from 7-9 pm. This talk will also be free and
open to the public, and is an excellent venue at which to learn more
about and discuss the artist's work.

John Kissick: A Nervous Decade opens to the public on February 5 and is
on view through May 8, 2011. The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315
Water Street in the heart of the Cultural District in Downtown Kelowna.
