Hi Jacqueline,
Have you considered WordPress. We started our site with a $199 template, then paid a local WordPress designer (www.beyondthebox.com) to add some custom features. This netted us huge savings.
WordPress is also easy to use, very intuitive and allows multiple users to access and update information. It can collect members, sync with an auto-email campaign service (such as AWeber) for sending invitations, press releases, news and announcements. And be adapted for e-commerce for donations. I love that it can be updated without the help of a web expert—I even make changes from my iphone!
This link is a great resource for design inspiration with lots of sample (most done in WordPress). www.vandelaydesign.com (I haven't used their services, but I enjoy browsing through their "inspiration" posts.)
Take a look at our site. Using WordPress we transformed our online presence, into an informative tool that helps our clients and builds our brand.
Good luck,
Karen
