Sybil Andrews to Open at the Burnaby Art Gallery
(BURNABY, BC) The Burnaby Art Gallery is pleased to present Sybil Andrews February 11 through April 3, 2011. Artist Sybil Andrews (1898-1992) is considered one of the most significant Canadian printmakers of the 20th Century. Known primarily for her linocut prints, she was influenced stylistically by Cubism, Italian Futurism, and Vorticism and found her primary interest in the rhythm, pattern, and movement of her subjects.

This exhibition includes 22 works on loan from the original Art Gallery of Greater Victoria exhibition combined with seven works from the Burnaby Art Gallery's collection. The exhibition surveys Andrews' career in Britain and Canada and includes several linocuts and engravings, a watercolour and a drypoint. The inclusion of this exhibition within the 2011 program demonstrates the gallery's commitment to historical print culture and senior artists from the local community.

Born in England, Andrews studied in London at the Heatherleys and Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Her influences include architect and artist Cyril Power who became her sketching partner in the 1920s, encouraging her commitment to sketching and to developing her keen eye. However, it was teacher Claude Flight who introduced her to linocut printing and the stylistic influence of Futurism. Linocuts quickly proved to be the ideal media for Andrews' interest in expressing the raw dynamism and energy of her subjects.

Andrews married in 1943 and emigrated with her husband to Canada in 1947 in the wake of World War II. They settled in Campbell River, British Columbia where for the first four years her artwork languished while they renovated an old seaside home. Andrews' practice was reinvigorated in 1951 and she spent the rest of her life adapting her modernist approach to decidedly West Coast subjects related to First Nations culture, the rainforest, and the logging and fishing industries. In these subjects we see her interest in rhythm, pattern and movement come to the fore. Sybil Andrews was also a great printmaking teacher, sharing her talents and knowledge with countless BC artists up until the end of her life. The combination of works from the collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the City of Burnaby permanent Art Collection represent a fine survey of Andrews' distinguished career in Britain and Canada.
