[BCMA] Replicas? - First Peoples' fishing gear

If you cannot find some replicas then you can make them yourself. I made some replica First Peoples' fishing gear for the Vancouver Museum back in 1974 while I was a summer student there. Better still, perhaps the local bands (e.g. Musqueam) might have someone who could make some for you.

Hilary Stewart's book CEDAR shows such fishing gear on pages 99-100. Historic examples in museums such as ours here at NWMA (IH 2010.1061.1, a Southern style "C" shaped one) are around. There are probably examples at the UBC Museum of Anthropology as well. The Southern hooks tend to be of bent wood in a "C" shape (Hilary shows a drawing of a mold for bending the wood) and the Northern type tend to be of two pieces of wood lashed together at a sharp angle ("V" shape.)

NWMA's halibut hook may be used in an upcoming exhibit of ours, so unfortunately I would not want to offer to lend it, though it may be examined.

Subject: [BCMA] Replicas?

Hello everyone,

We're looking to either borrow or have some replicas produced for an
upcoming temporary exhibit on First Nations Fishing here at the Cannery.
We're looking for bent wood halibut hooks in particular, but would also be
interested in other Coast Salish style fishing tools like dip nets or
spears.

Can any one suggest a good source for these types of replicas?

Thanks,
Heidi Rampfl
