I asked this question of our local office supply store in preparation for
our Office Evolutions exhibit this year, and apparently you can just get a
modern typewriter ribbon, unwind it from the package and re-wind around the
spools on the old typewriter. You need a ribbon that's close to the same
width as the original, and of course you'd have to pay attention to how the
original was wound when to remove it. I haven't tried it myself, but
apparently there are a number of people who do this and are still using
their 1940s era typewriters as a result.

Subject: [BCMA] Typewriter Ribbon
Hello
I have had a question from a Museum visitor who asked where she might
purchase typewriter ribbon. Does anyone have a current supplier of
ribbon for typewriters ranging from the 1930s to 1970s in the Greater
Vancouver area?
Thanks for the help
Rebecca
