Steveston Museum - Where hair and history meet

Richmond, BC - "Hairstyles have an extremely strong connection
to history. They help to define eras," explains Gabrielle Sharp,
Coordinator of the Steveston Museum. Flicking her own bobbed hair, she
continues, "for example, women bobbing their hair was so shocking in the
1920s that some were fired from their jobs and doctors warned it could
lead to health problems."

Steveston Museum celebrates this connection between hair and
history on Saturday, July 9 from noon to 4 p.m. with Styling the Past,
the first instalment of its annual Summer Music Series. Led by theatre
hair and makeup artist, Devon Baker, three professional hair stylists
will offer members of the public free retro hair styles in the Steveston
Museum Park.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m., listen to fabulous music from Latin
group Sangre Morena, local youth talent, and the Squares Barbershop
Quartet. Women can ponder getting a style based on pin curls, beehives
or 1980s big hair. For men, an Elvis pompadour or a cool 1930s slicked
back hairdo will give a glimpse of generations past.

Free kids crafts include decorating cardboard 1920s-style
headbands and paper sailor hats. They can also enter a colouring
contest.

"Hair is going to continue to help define historical periods,"
Gabrielle states. "Just last year, there were a huge number of photos
and articles in the news expressing opinions both for and against Justin
Bieber's hair style. Future TV shows and movies set in 2010 will
probably use the Bieber hair style to represent a generation of young
males."

Bring your lunch, a folding chair or blanket to sit upon and be
prepared for great music and fabulous hair styles. Stylists will be
offering free hair styles on a first come first serve basis from noon
until 4 p.m. and music starts at 12:30 p.m. until 3:15 p.m. Steveston
Museum is located at 3811 Moncton Street, Richmond, in the heart of
Steveston Village. For more information, please call Steveston Museum on
