Mary-Lou Florian received her honorary degree today, at the first Spring University of Victoria convocation. She gave a stirring speech in favour of museums and the conservation profession. We will attempt to make it available.

Please pass my congratulations and warmest regards to Mary-Lou, one conservator who always kept us curators on their toes!

Subject: [BCMA] Mary-Lou Florian receives Honourary PhD at UVIC Spring Convocation June 14, 2011
Recognizing exceptional records of distinction and achievement, the University of Victoria will confer honorary degrees upon four individuals during spring convocation ceremonies, June 14 – 17, in the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium.
Mary-Lou Florian
Honorary Doctor of Science (10 a.m., June 14)
An internationally recognized pioneer of conservation science in Canada, Mary-Lou Florian was the first biologist hired by the Canadian Conservation Institute before she joined the staff of the Royal BC Museum in 1978. In an extended and distinguished career at the museum, she focused her expertise on artifact conservation – especially First Nations’ totems, basketry and wooden cultural objects recovered from waterlogged archaeological sites.
She has consulted widely on fungal damage in art collections and is regularly called upon to identify archaeological wood and plant materials. At UVic, Florian was affectionately known as the “rotten wood lady” among her students in the Faculty of Fine Arts’ cultural resource management program.
