Financial Management in Cultural Organizations

Build your confidence in planning a business case for your work

April 4- 9, 2011 in WHITEHORSE, Yukon

This off-campus course is proudly offered in partnership with the Yukon Historical and Museums Association.

Your creative work in museums, heritage and arts organizations is reliant on strong financial and organizational foundations. This valuable and timely course builds the knowledge, skills, and confidence that you bring to business and financial planning, management, and performance assessment in your specialized area of cultural sector practice and strengthens your confidence in advocating for support and funding.

Participants will be encouraged to consider their own organization (or one they are familiar with) as a case study to explore:

* the nature and values of not-for-profit cultural organizations

* business planning as a framework for setting goals, priorities, and strategies

* financial management cycles, budgeting, and resource allocation - forecasting revenues and expenditures

* internal controls, evaluation, and audit legal and ethical issues

*             effective grant writing

Instructor: Pauline Thompson is a Chartered Accountant, with degrees in economics and history, and a cultural management consultant with extensive financial and administrative management experience. Her recent work includes needs assessment, governance, operational reviews, cultural planning, policy development and mentoring for museums, theatre companies, historic sites, municipalities, government agencies, and professional associations.
