Spring Exhibits at the Burnaby Art Gallery

Sybil Andrews
Through April 3, 2011
Artist Sybil Andrews (1898-1992) is considered one of the most significant Canadian printmakers of the 20th Century. Known primarily for her linocut prints, she was influenced stylistically by Cubism, Italian Futurism, and Vorticism and found her primary interest in the rhythm, pattern, and movement of her subjects.
This exhibition includes 22 works from the original Art Gallery of Greater Victoria exhibition combined with seven works from the Burnaby Art Gallery's collection. The exhibition surveys Andrews' career in Britain and Canada and includes several linocuts and engravings, a watercolour and a drypoint.

Selections from the Permanent Collection:The Linocut
Through April 3, 2011
In response to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria's travelling exhibition Sybil Andrews, currently on exhibit at the Burnaby Art Gallery, the gallery is showcasing an exhibit of linocuts from its permanent collection. The ideas behind the Selections from the Permanent Collection: The Linocut exhibition are twofold: one, to complement Sybil Andrews by showcasing pioneering and important works that chronicle the history of the linocut technique within the Burnaby Art Gallery's permanent collection; and second, to exhibit works that reflect a multitude of genres and approaches to subject matter. The result is an intimate exhibition of 25 works that exemplifies the diversity of the Burnaby Art Gallery's holdings and represents some of the most engaging relief prints to be found within the City of Burnaby's Permanent Art Collection.

Alistair Bell's Animals: Portraits of the Wild
April 14 - June 19, 2011
Reception: April 14, 5 pm

Alistair Bell's prints are an important part of the City of Burnaby's Permanent Art Collection. In 2010 Allan Bell donated a significant number of prints and preliminary sketches of some of the most notable works created by his father. This exhibition shall explore Bell's creative arc from its early beginnings until his death in 1997.
